Tax season is in full swing for 2021 returns. While the 2020 tax year was hectic and unpredictable, there is hope for 2021. To keep your return moving through the “IRS machine” there are a few things to keep in mind when filing your 2021 tax return.
- File electronically and use direct deposit. Not only does direct deposit get you a faster refund, but it also can potentially shield you from fraud.
- If you received the child tax credit payments last year, be sure your filing matches with the letter 6419 that the IRS sent to taxpayers.
- Ensure that your third economic impact payment is accurately reported on your tax return. You should have received letter 6475 from the IRS showing how much you received.
There is still time to do some last-minute tax planning! You can contribute to an individual retirement account (IRA) up to the tax filing deadline, if you have not maxed out your contributions there is still time to do so. Keep in mind that the limits are $6,000 for taxpayers under fifty and a catch-up provision allows for an extra $1,000 for those fifty and older.
One of the most important things to remember, for most filers, is that the federal tax deadline for your 2021 return is April 18, 2022.
